The category of Christian experience, or lived Christian experience, has now fully entered theological debate. While the separation between theology and spirituality has been absorbed as an explanation of the historical development of Christian reflection, there is also an emerging need for renewed integration.

Holiness is what the Church needs most in order to fulfil its mission of being the saving reflection of Christ, lumen gentium, in the world. Without holiness, every achievement of its action in the world and every effort of continual renewal become impossible or fruitless.
