Servants of God
Maria Teresa della SS. Trinità (Aycinena)
Biography
Maria Teresa de Jesus Anastasia Cayetana was born in Guatemala City on April 15, 1784, into the bosom of a wealthy family.
She distributed all her possessions to follow Jesus in the consecrated life of the Discalced Carmelites. In the Order of Saint Teresa she received the name of María Teresa of the Most Holy Trinity. She made her religious profession of the vows of chastity, poverty and obedience on November 24, 1808.
Surrendered completely to God’s love through an intense life of prayer, an unlimited dedication to charity towards her sisters and an absolute self-denial in everything, she lived the sublime experience of the Christian life that mystics call «spiritual marriage». Elected Prioress of her Community, she led her sisters in fidelity to the spirit of Saint Teresa.
Full of merits and virtues, she died a holy death in Guatemala City on November 29, 1841.
The Diocesan Inquiry into her «life, virtue and reputation for holiness» was opened on 30th of April 2008 at the Archdiocese of Guatemala. On 19th of January 2018, the decree of validity was granted.
Procedure
1. The canonical norms concerning the procedure to be followed in the Causes of Saints are stated in the Apostolic Constitution Divinus Perfectionis Magister promulgated by John Paul II on 25 January 1983 (AAS LXXV, 1983, 349-355).
2. To initiate a Cause it is necessary that at least five years pass after the death of the candidate. This is to allow for greater balance and objectivity in the evaluation of the case and to allow the emotions of the moment to decant. There must be a clear conviction among people about his/her sanctity (fama sanctitas) and about the efficacy of his/her intercession with the Lord (fama signorum).
